A massive massively multiplayer online game
World of Warcraft is by far the most popular Massively Multiplayer Online Game game ever created. Millions log in every day to quest in the gigantic world of Azeroth to slay dragons, other epic foes, and possibly most importantly, each other. What makes these games so compelling?
For starters, it's huge, and growing. With new expansions all the time and a massive world to begin with, there is much to explore in Azeroth. From beautiful forests to dark graveyars and everything in between, there is a vast landscape with lots of variety to adventure in. Blizzard has a talent for crafting worlds that bend to the fictional societies that inhabit them, and the world of Azeroth feels very alive despite the cartoonish appearance.
All this would be nothing, however, if it wasn't for the online play. There is the fun of playing with friends and banding together to accomplish epic feats of heroism, and the thrill of smack-talking opponents who dare challenge your guild's dominance. Human opponents tend to be much more exciting than robotically-controlled computer players; for the luddites reading this, would you rather play poker or cribbage against a computer or against real people that you know? Therein lies the appeal of World of Warcraft.
There are lots of other online games now, especially after World of Warcraft hit a major commercial success, but Warcraft remains and probably will remain for some time the 10 ton gorilla of the marketplace. The sheer amount of detail combined with population (are you going to play the game all your friends are playing, or the one only a couple are?) makes for first class experience. You can visit World of Warcraft's website if you would like to know more about the game and see videos.
