World of Warcraft Collectible Action Figures - Get Ready for your Gamer's Christmas Shopping List

Just when you thought you had gotten the most out of your World of Warcraft experience, you realized that there was still more for you to enjoy. World of Warcraft may haves set new limits on PC entertainment and collectible trading card games, but the fun doesn't end there. Fans will be proud to know that DC Comics takes the hit gaming title to a whole new level with its new line of World of Warcraft collectible action figures.

With a release scheduled for this upcoming fall, these action figures will no doubt make fine additions to any World of Warcraft fanatic's library, so if you're shopping for a gamer's Christmas present, they just might top your list. A total of six models will be released in the first series, and once they hit shelves there is no question that gamers will be longing to pick up one of these collectible figures. However, it may be difficult in obtaining one of these collector's items due to the fact that they will only be carried by a select number of retailers.

World of Warcraft has been at the top of PC gaming sales since its release in November of 2004. The production of the action figures was undertaken to give fans an opportunity to make a hobby out of a virtual pastime. The first release of figures will include a Blood Elf Rogue, an Orc Shaman, an Undead Warlock, and a Dwarf Warrior. The figures will be range between 5-8 inches in size and will be sold through select toy retailers. In addition, a second release is expected that will include two more of the larger figures, a Draenei Paladin and Illidan Stormrage.

DC Unlimited, a branch of DC Comics, is projected to release the first series of action figures in November 2007, just in time for Christmas. While it is not set in stone as to how much the figures will cost when they hit the market, various sites across the web have them available for pre-order at a price of roughly $30 for the first set of four WoW collectible action figures.

So What is Guitar Hero?

Have you ever played an "air guitar"?

I have.

Many times when listening to my Sex Pistols, Sham 69, or Stranglers records (Yeh, I know, I'm showing my age now).

But playing the "air guitar" has often been looked upon as a bit "geeky", yet it's something most of us have done and still do.

Well, Guitar Hero brings the art of playing the air guitar literally screaming and kicking into the 20th Century and out of the closet.

Playing the air guitar is now actually seen as cool and hip, especially if your good.

I was first exposed to the game at my local Mall when I saw groups of teenagers round a video game machine thrashing away on a "guitar" shaped "instrument".

So what is Guitar Hero?

In the "game" players flail away on guitar-shaped controller and try to replicate the moves of the guitarist playing a popular song.
In essence its a bit like guitar karaoke.

What makes it unusual and unique is it comes packaged with a guitar peripheral modeled after a black Gibson SG rather than using the console's standard controller.
The game's guitar has no strings; its fret board features five colored buttons that you press with your left hand as you hit a plastic strumming bar with your right.
Its appeal is in the ease of playing and "learning" to play the guitar to recreate your favorite bands and songs.

It "makes you feel like you're a guitar player without having to practice for years and years," says Ted Lange, an associate producer and in-house guitar expert at Red Octane, the company that makes "Guitar Hero."
Published by Red Octane in partnership with Activision it has become a huge success and has achieved cult status already amongst its many loyal "followers".

The development of Guitar Hero was inspired by Konami's Guitar Freaks arcade game, which at the time had not seen much exposure in the North American market.
In total, four games have been released for video game consoles, while games have been released for mobile phones and the Nintendo DS hand held gaming system.

But I predict there is more to come as the game garners mass appeal.

The Heroes

Another popular element of the game is its characters, or the Guitar Heroes featured.

Each character has been given a rich and believable history making the characters more "real" and "alive". Add to this some real Guitar Heroes such as "Slash" and suddenly the line between real and unreal becomes blurred.

Popular characters included Johnny Napalm, a punk rocker looking not to dissimilar to Sex Pistols lead singer Johnny Rotten.

Then there's God of Rock, Axel Steel (any guesses to his "true identity?), Izzy Sparks, Slash, Judy Nails, Lou, and Metalhead to name a few.

What makes it different?

Guitar Hero is different because guitar playing is seen as a showy and flashy thing to do.

It's always been revered and the worlds top guitarists are adored and emulated by their millions of fans who aspire to play like them.

Everyone has, at some time, played the "air guitar" usually locked away in your bedroom with just you and your records.

This is what has given the game its mass appeal and popularity.

It has tapped into this and dragged the practice of playing the air guitar out into the open and made it mainstream and "acceptable".

Add to that alcohol, members of the opposite sex, or the same sex, and it becomes like going to a party in your parents' basement

In New York Guitar Hero nights have quickly become a hit in some bars and pubs and competitions are a regular event.

In fact McFarlane Toys, makers of the Guitar Hero action figures, recently sponsored a Guitar Hero competition prior to the Metallica concert at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Ariz.

The competition was open to everyone and took place near the fountains adjacent to Jobing.com Arena on the huge video board.

There were loads of cool prizes given away, including t-shirts, Guitar Hero video games and McFarlane's own Guitar Hero action figures.

There is already a huge amount of merchandising surrounding the game with custom guitar consoles, soundtracks, statues and now action figures.

McFarlane Toys, one of the USA's biggest toy manufacturers, has announced that they have signed a deal in partnership with Activision to produce action figures based on the hit video game.

Some of the most popular characters in Guitar Hero are to be represented in McFarlanes series of Guitar Hero's action figures and they will even be producing packs of individual, customizable guitars for them.

So it looks like 2009 could be the year to brush the dust off your air guitar break out that old pair of torn jeans and t-shirt and head to the local Mall.

If you haven?t seen or heard of Guitar Heroes yet you will.

Because, with the right marketing and product placement I predict this could become as big as Karaoke was in the 80?s.

What is Halo?

Do you know what Halo is?

Until recently I would have answered "No" to this question. So what's changed?

Well, first there was the news that McFarlane Toys had acquired the license to produce the official Halo 3 figures. But no big deal there, right?

OK, then I got to see the first pictures of the proposed figures, and this pricked my interest.

As time went on I became more aware of the buzz surrounding Halo 3, and so I being an inquisitive sort of person I began to research and read up on it a little more. And the more I saw and read the more I got sucked in by the excitement and anticipation for the game.

So much so that once I can sneak it passed the wife I intend buying myself an Xbox 360 so I too can play it!

Halo is a trilogy of video games for Microsoft's Xbox 360 created by Bungie Studios.

The story centers around a character called Master Chief, i.e. Master Chief Petty Officer SPARTAN-117. Master Chief is a human super-soldier equipped with many technologically advanced weaponry and body armor.

Master Chief and his AI companion Cortana are fighting against the alien Covenant in a futuristic universe. The Halo of the game title is a huge mega-structure that is in orbit. This huge orbital structure is similar to that in the Ringworld series of books by Larry Niven. In fact he was approached by Bungie to write the novelisation based on the game.

All three games have been critically acclaimed and praised as being the best and most influential first person shooters on a game console. Other games trying to exemplify Halo have therefore been classed as "Halo Killer".

Since its first release the franchise has expanded into other markets with five novels, several graphic novels, action figures, and several other spin off titles and games.

The cultural impact of Halo has been compared to the impact that the original Star Wars trilogy had in the 70's and 80's and in fact still has to this day. The term "Halo Nation" refers to the people who play the game.

The final episode in the current series of the game was released on Sept 25, 2007 and grossed an incredible $170 MILLION in its first 24 HOURS! Making it the biggest event ever in entertainment history.

Halo: Combat Evolved

The first installment of the trilogy takes place on the mysterious Halo mega-structure was released on November 15, 2001. In a timeline before the games beginnings a collection of alien races known as the Covenant, intent on the destruction of mankind, attack the home of human military production, called Reach, and destroy it.

But a single starship, the Pillar of Autumn escapes carrying with it the last known SPARTAN-II super soldier referred to as Master Chief. The ships on board AI named Cortana initiates a random jump through slipspace attempting to draw the Covenant away from Earth when the ship unexpectedly discovers Halo. It is at this stage that you assume the role of Master Chief and descend to the ring's surface to battle the Covenant and discover Halo's secrets.

The game received much critical acclaim on its release and was ranked as the 14th best game ever by IGN.

Halo II

Released on Nov 9, 2004 two different editions of Halo 2 were launched. The standard game comes with the traditional Xbox packaging and a single disc, the single and multi-player components. The Collectors Edition came with a specially designed aluminum case with a bonus DVD, extra booklet and a different user manual. The manual in the collector's edition looked at the game from the perspective of the Covenant military whereas the standard version was from the perspective of the human military. On it's first day of release Halo 2 grossed $124 million making it the biggest entertainment event of all time at that time and has since than gone on to sell over 8 million copies since.

With new characters, game mechanics, weapons, vehicles, improved artificial intelligence and a more advanced graphic engine that utilizes normal mapping and bloom effects. For the first time the game also supported online multiplayer games via Xbox Live.

Along with its online playability it also has Bungie.net integration with ranking and tracking for every online game. A PC port developed by an internal team composing of Microsoft Games and Bungie Studios has also been developed. Halo 1 pc and Halo 2 Vista include multiplayer maps not available on the Xbox version and has features for custom created content with the Halo Editing Kit.

A New Project

On Sept 27, 2006 an untitled Halo project was announced by Microsoft that was to be co-written and co-designed by Peter Jackson, it has since been revealed that this project is in fact a new story arc for the Halo series. It has also been confirmed that this will be a new episodic series and is likely to be a new trilogy.

Halo 3 Becomes the World's Biggest Selling Game

The time: 12 midnight

Halo 3 has become the biggest ever entertainment event in history, surpassing such events as the release of the next Harry Potter book and the release of Spiderman 3. In the first 24 HOURS it grossed an estimated $170 million in the US alone.

Even before any retail shop opened its doors it had sold 1.7 million copies in presales and with 10,000 stores holding Midnight Madness events up and down the country the scenes were reminiscent of major movie premiers.

Times Square in New York was abuzz with fans awaiting the official release at midnight with major sport and TV personalties joining in the celebrations.

With retailers across the country reporting phenomenal demand for the game Bob McKenzie, Senior Vice President for GameStop Corp said that,"The initial demand we've seen for Halo 3 is astounding, and the game is on track to being the number one gaming title of all time."

Halo 3 is available in three different formats. The Standard Edition contains the game disc and manual in the standard Xbox packaging.

The Collector's Edition is in a custom metal case that contains the game disc, manual, an interactive Xbox bonus disc with several featurettes and "Beastiarum" a hard cover bound collection of information and art on the different species, cultures and civilizations featured in the game.

Then there's the Legendary Edition which contains the game disc, manual, bonus disk, Beastiarum, a DVD containing special exclusive content and a scale replica of Master Chief's helmet as a case for the three discs.

In addition Gamestation stores in the UK gave a limited edition 3 inch Master Chief figure from McFarlane Toys with the first 1000 to be pre-ordered.

Halo 3 is the third and last in the first of the Halo trilogies of games, a new trilogy is currently in production, and focuses on the interstellar war in the 26 Century between the Covenant and Mankind.

The Covenant is a collection of Alien races who have joined together intent on the destruction of Earth and Mankind.

The Covenant, after decades of war, have now begun the invasion of Earth and you, as the Master Chief, must try and defend humanity. Master Chief is the last known SPARTAN-117 genetically enhanced super soldier surviving after the Covenant attacked and destroyed the Reach, mankind's military production base, in Halo.

The games story line and action mainly takes place on foot in Halo 3 but there is also an element of vehicle combat in the game. Halo 3 largely focuses on the struggle between mankind, the Covenant and the Flood.

There are several different environments in the game ranging from lush jungle, to battle damaged cities and sparse desert. The behaviour and interactivity of AI, both enemies and allies, has been significantly improve including non-combatant behaviour also.

For the first time Halo 3 allows up to four players to play co-operative game play on one Xbox 360 or up to 16 players in a single match over a LAN or Xbox Live.

Also, unlike the previous Halo games, instead of each player assuming an identical role of Master Chief in Halo 3 the first player takes up the role of Master Chief, the second player plays the Arbiter and the last two players create Elites. Although each player has identical starting abilities each has different starting weapons.

Story Synopsis

I will try to be brief here without giving away to much detail or to many spoilers. Halo 3 doesn't begin immediately from where Halo 2 left off as a comic mini-series Hao: Uprising will bridge the gap between the two.

The game begins with Master Chief back on an Earth that has been ravaged and desicated by Covenant loyalists under the control of the Prophet of Truth. The Master Chief, along with the Arbiter, make their way to an UNSC outpost, but shortly after their arrival it is attacked and destroyed by the Covenant.

Under orders from Commander Keyes and Lord Hood they proceed to the African city of Voi to destroy the Covenant's anti air defenses in preparation for an all out attack on Truth.

However Truth activates a large artifact to create a huge slipspace portal that the Covenant ships escape through. As the humans ponder on what to do a ship controlled by the Flood arrives through the slipspace and crash lands quickly the parasite in it throughout the city.

With the arrival of the Elite Fleet Master Chief attempts to fight off the Flood and cover infected areas with glass. Deciding to follow Truth Master Chief, the Arbiter and the Elite Fleet leave Earth via the slipspace and arrive near a huge artificial mega-structure, which they find out is the Ark and is positioned outside the Milky Way. Led by Guilty Spark the group investigate the Ark and arrive at the control room barely in time to prevent Truth from activating the rings. Meanwhile a Flood infested High Charity arrives by slipspace and after the Prophet of Truth has been executed they discover that the Ark has constructed another ring. In order to prevent The Flood spreading further Master Chief activates the ring.

Master Chief and the Arbiter then take High Charity to rescue Cortana who is still being held captive by Gravemind then after rescuing her they destroy the Covenants homeworld, apparently destroying Gravemind but...
